To access the new France server, Golden Frog VyprVPN customers can just update their hostname to:

We are pleased once again to announce the latest beta release of the Mimo Usenet browser. Download the free update now. This release continues the “look and feel” user interface updates along with select bug fixes and new feature improvements.

The new Mimo User Interface becomes more visible with this release. In particular, version 0.2.3 introduces the Action Bar, a more consistent place to access common commands. The Action Bar adapts to the content on the current tab in Mimo, variously presenting controls to open newsgroups in new tabs, download selected articles, Reply to or Forward an existing post, manage downloading message headers in newsgroups, and control your download queue.

We also updated the Search and Filter bars, refined the styles and colors, and included a more consistent appearance for tabs and other interactive elements.

Mimo is starting to feel like a new application, but we are far from finished with the user interface overhaul. The Golden Frog development team is continuing to implement more of planned user interface improvements to make Mimo even easier to use. In upcoming releases, look for updates to how Mimo presents images and thumbnails, additional filtering, and more details on active downloads.
We are pleased to announce the next beta release of the Mimo Usenet Browser. Download the free update now. The primary changes in this release focused on two key areas:

Bug fixes and performance improvements: This new release specifically targeted some the performance of the newly overhauled internal engine of the last couple releases. You can now download large amounts of newsgroup information without running Mimo out of memory.
First glimpse of the new User Interface (UI): Our new sidebar for downloads and group bookmarks is debuting in this release of Mimo. We’re excited to start coding the newly designed UI.

Full details are available in our Change Log.

Mimo’s New UI
Last year we asked our UI designers to focus on making Mimo even easier to use. And now that we have Mimo’s internal engine optimized, a team of our developers are switching their focus to the UI. But don’t worry, our core team will still be working on implementing new features, bug fixes, and performance enhancements.

Due to our iterative development process, we are able to release updates more frequently. We do this so our users can take advantage of our latest development efforts and provide us with faster feedback. The UI work will follow this iterative method as we release new bits of the new UI as we finish them.

It’s important to note this frequent release schedule will often cause parts of the UI to be in a “functional” state, but not necessarily a “final” state. Mimo is still beta, and we are walking around here with hard hats on.
Golden Frog, a global security software developer and applications provider, announced today the launch of a new Point of Presence (PoP) in the United Kingdom for VyprVPN users. According to a report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, it is believed that the Syrian Telecom Ministry has launched a “man-in-the-middle” attack against the more secure HTTPS version of Facebook.

“Man-in-the-middle” attacks allow the attacker to enter into private conversations and interject their own messaging without the victims’ knowledge. This particular attack is not sophisticated – raising security warnings in users’ browsers and unverified by the Certificate Authority. Unfortunately, most users are so used to getting pop-up warnings that they don’t even read them anymore. Instead, they just click the warnings away, giving their attacker explicit access to their Facebook account and private communications.

There are ways to protect yourself and your data – no matter where in the world you are. EFF noted that some Syrian ISPs have already blocked an anonymizing proxy service, named Tor. But don’t fret, Golden Frog’s VyprVPN, a personal VPN service, can also protect you against Syria’s man-in-the-middle attack. First, VyprVPN tunnels traffic to locations in the United States, Europe, or Asia – bypassing the Syrian servers being used in these attacks. Second, all data sent through the tunnel is encrypted, so even if government systems tries analyze your traffic, they cannot tell what sites are being visited.

As mentioned in the article published by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, there are other services, identified as ‘Internet Proxy’ solutions that allow users to by-pass local restrictions. Many of these provide a similar feature set to VyprVPN, however, the key difference is VyprVPN’s ability to provide personal, encrypted access to the Internet, through its managed servers at locations around the world – without affecting speed. This means users in Syria can circumvent these attacks by the Syrian Telecom Ministry and connect securely to the Internet. Furthermore, VyprVPN’s encryption enables deeper levels of privacy and security that traditional web proxies do not offer – allowing users the ability to surf the Internet in confidence.

For the great lot of us who download the latest apps on our Smartphones – how many of us actually consider the privacy risk at stake? An escalating number of mobile software applications depend on a user’s location as an integral component to what they do.

According to a recent New York Times blog, leading market research firm Nielsen reports that many Americans, particularly women, have strong concerns about privacy loss due to the usage of location-based mobile services. The Nielson report appeared just one day after another report revealing that the Apple iPhone and iPad 3G are actively storing data about users’ locations. The report states that 59 percent of women have privacy concerns with these services, as compared to 52% of men; and privacy concerns were notably higher among those over the age of 45.

Are you concerned about YOUR privacy when downloading various applications? First, pay close attention to the Smartphone location services that you utilize/download. Second, learn more about how you can protect your privacy with Golden Frog’s VyprVPN.

VyprVPN can prevent ‘geo-targeting’ according to users’ specific mobile IP address. The innovative service provides an extra layer of protection to encrypt your data and ensure a safe, private browsing experience without slowing your connection. VyprVPN is compatible with iPhone, iPads and Android devices.

Golden Frog is excited to release Mimo Beta v0.2.1 for Giganews Diamond members. The Golden Frog Dev team has fixed many known and reported bugs in the new download engine resulting in increased stability and speed.

The biggest change in v0.2.1 Beta is how Mimo processes and stores Usenet headers for newsgroups. Below are some the major improvements:

Increased header download speed resulting in improved speed with browsing newsgroups
Initial group population is four times faster
Fixed several hangs and download errors
Improved image handling and header retrieval
Fixed several connectivity and startup issues

With the launch of the Global Service Provider Program, Golden Frog offers service providers a solution to further differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace.”

With clients in over 50 countries, VyprVPN is currently offered by a variety of service providers and used by global business travelers and consumers.

Are you taking the right measures to protect your information across Wi-Fi networks? YouGov and the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office conducted a poll that found more than 40% of Wi-Fi users do not know how to change their network’s security settings. These settings are put in place to help protect users from cyber crime and identity theft, but if not properly used, the network and users’ data are vulnerable to attacks.

Leaving your Wi-Fi connection unsecured allows others to access your personal data, reduces the speed of your connection and can allow others to commit crimes via YOUR connection– all without your knowledge. According to this same survey, 16% of Wi-Fi users do not even know if they are using an unsecured network. Is your network secure?

Golden Frog’s VyprVPN provides an easy and cost-effective way to protect your personal data – whether on a private or public network. VyprVPN provides an extra layer of protection by encrypting your data to ensure a safe, private browsing experience without slowing you down.
